Mexico

Historically, Mexico was an important producer of natural pearls and shell material. Cultured pearl farming emerged in the 20th century. Both Pinctada mazatlanica and Pteria sterna pearl oyster species are cultivated. Established in 1993, first commercial marine cultured pearls were harvested there in 2000. These were the first marine beaded cultured pearls in the Americas. For more information also see www.perlas.com.mx
